Charles Marmar, MD
Program Director

Charles Marmar is the Founder and Program Director of the Police Stress and Health Program.

Dr. Marmar is Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco. He serves as Associate Chief of Staff, Mental Health, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco, CA. He also serves as the Director of the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Research Program at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

An active researcher in the study of trauma and PTSD for the past 25 years, Dr. Marmar has received funding from both federal and private institutions to conduct studies in psychopharmacology, psychopathology, psychobiology, quality of care, psychotherapy treatment and phenomenology of PTSD.

He is past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Traumatic Stress. He has authored numerous articles and book chapters, and co-authored several books on the topic of PTSD.

Dr. Marmar's work with emergency services personnel began in 1989, and he currently serves as Principal Investigator on all studies conducted by the Police Stress and Health Program.
